Stiff Sticks win 2011 Men's Supper League!

Fairway Frank Comito carried the Stiff Sticks to victory on the fairways and greens of the Carroll Country Club by smashing the tomatoes of Tomato John Gradoville. The winning team was Mike Nelson, Frank Comito, Chip Wittrock and Neal Cross.

The team of Tomato John Gradoville, Mike Loehr, Rick Grote and Nick Fangman finish second.

The team of Pat "Spanky" Vollstedt, Steve "Cuda" Quandt, Papa Joe Pick and Tom Duff finish in 3rd after beating the Commercial Savings Bank. Papa Joe Pick and Cuda Quandt were all smiles for beating the two younger Pick boys.

The Commercial Savings Bank team of Jay Westerkamp, Brad Pick, Dirk Glynn, Aaron Pick and Ryan Milligan spent a lot of weeks at the top only to settle for fourth.

Budweiser team leader Pat Malloy was presented the coach of year award by Bud One Jim Auen for reshaping the old Miller Lite team into a Supper league contender.

In a post round interview Malloy said "I would like to thank all the hard work of my team. Their dedication to the game really showed."

Paul Tigges and Brian Billmeier handed out umbrellas to Flying Bob Raue, Brad Pick, Scott Monical, Brian Widdel, Bob Muhlbauer, Aaron Pick and Tomato John Gradoville.

Low gross winners were Collin Hackett and Mike Nelson. Low net winners were the Carroll Cycle Center's head man Terry Ruchti and Monument Man Loren Boyce. Closest to the pin awards went to Brad Stork and Fairway Frank Comito. Longest putt award winners were Pat Macke and Jair Mayhall.

Scott Quandt wins 2011 Bill Franey Open

Even with a two shot lead on the final hole Scott Quandt of Carroll was not totally believing he could win his first Bill Franey Open at the Raccoon Valley Golf Course in Jefferson on Sunday. After two time champion Craig Mertz blistered his drive down the middle of the fairway on the closing hole Quandt turned to his caddie Carroll Country Club Golf Professional Paul Tigges and said “with my luck in this tournament he(referring to Mertz) will probably make it from there.” Quandt has finished in 2nd place four out the 1st five years of the tournament. Quandt’s winning score of 102 is the lowest 27 hole total in the history of the tournament. Quandt most recently won the club tournament at the Carroll Country Club and has a couple of other wins this summer. “It is good to see him finally break through and win. He is a solid player” said tournament director Mike Franey. After the round Quandt said “I love playing this tournament it is awesome.”


Two time champion Craig Mertz finished three shots back in second. Micah Destival finished in third with 106 and former Carroll Country Club professional Joe Ward was fourth with 107. Former champions Mike Eckerman, Wade Pettitt and Aaron Ahrendson were not in this year’s field.
The tournament named after Bill Franey, father of Mike Franey of Carroll who passed away in May of 2006 attracted 39 of the 72 players in the field. The tournament was formerly known as the Al Hoy Memorial, where Franey served as the tournament director for 25 years. In 2006 the board of directors of the golf course renamed the tournament the Bill Franey Open.

Proceeds from the tournament support a scholarship given annually to a student training to be an electric lineman at Northwest Community College in Sheldon. Franey was a lineman for the Midland Power Coop in Jefferson for 31 years and served as line superintendent for another 10 years.

All golfers played 18 holes with the low 16 players qualifying for a final championship nine holes. Joe Ward and Scott Quandt shared medalist honors in the final round with very impressive rounds of four under par 32.
Other Carroll golfers in the championship flight were Steve Sinnard 111, Lonny Lehrkamp, who was celebrating a birthday on Sunday, 111, Eric Buttenbach, formerly of Carroll, 111, Corey Bluml and Collin Hackett 113 and Nate Ward, formerly of Carroll 117.

Steve “Cuda” Quandt was second in the first flight and Wyatt Haukap finished in third with a 77. Others in the first flight were Bob Muhlbauer 78, Tony Pietig 78, Kuemper High School Senior Matt Gute 78, Adam Pick 78, John Dukes 79, John Weber 79. Mike Gute was second in the second flight with an 81 followed by Andy Reiman with a 82. Others in the second flight were Terry “Wong” Olson 83, Papa Joe Pick 83, Tim Gute 83, Pete Collison 83, Joe Cale 83, Frank Comito 84, Paul Tigges 84, Jon Hoffert 84, Steve Sapp 85, and Dave Nelson 85. Brad Stork placed 3rd in the 3rd flight with an 85. Others in the 3rd flight were Mike Franey 87, John Beiter 88, Mike Schulz 88, Pat Macke 88, Jim White 88 and Steve “Hans” Auen 89. Golfers in the fourth flight were Matt Lujano 93, Scott Tjaden 99, Mike McDermott 106 and Scott Kanne 112.

Lonny Lehrkamp celebrated a birthday on Sunday at the Bill Franey Open.

Former Carroll Country Club Golf Professional Joe Ward finished in 4th with a final round 32 that tied Scott Quandt for medalist honors of the final round.

Bud Light Wins.....Bud Two is MVP........Probation for new Bud team!

It was a night that your Bud Light team needed to get out of the cellar in the Zach Johnson division and start the ultimate come back. On a scheduled four person scramble fun night your Bud Light team came out blazing riding the hot putter of Bud Two Troy Auen to post a nine under par round and capture the maximum 24 points possible. More importantly your Bud Light team climbed out of the cellar and is now tied for 10th with Hawkeye Commodity Brokers.

Other big winners from fun night were Greteman Chiropratic, Volquartsen Customs and Fairway Frank's Stiff Sticks. Those who did not have much fun on fun night were the La-z-boys who fell into the cellar, defending champions Macke Motors, Hawkeye Commodity Brokers, Olsen Muhlbauer and Supper league's newest team Budweiser.


The new Budweiser team has been put on a three week probation period for team member Joel Harris still using an old Miller Lite bag to carry his weapons. Many golfers noticed the bag and the breach of loyalty was confirmed by Harris's playing partner Fred Dolezal.



Over in the other division Subway remains at the top with a second place fun night finish. Juergen's Lawn and Landscape the fun night winners as Mike "Jewels" Eckerman shows up for a rare Supper league performance. Several residents along Pleasant Ridge Road think that if Elise Pick is not available to mow the family lawn that Juergen's should be hired as a recent Papa Joe mowing event left the yard 1/4" high and brown! Pizza Ranch and Chico Kanne's oil jobbers also had good nights.The head oil jobber is coming off the biggest golf win of his life by winning the recent Southern golf trip where he left several of his fellow competitors shaking this heads. The less fortunate fun nighters were Kasperbauer Cleaners, Utilcomm, Byron's Boyz and the Carroll Cycle Center. Team reports from cycle headquarters indicate Captain Terry Ruchti may be distracted by a little one named "Owen". Seems like a legitimate reason to this publisher and no further action is required.

This past weekend signified a beginning of the end as the Dukes family said goodbye to their family home in Marathon, Iowa. For the past 42 years Marathon has been home to the Dukes family so emotions ran high in the farewell tour. Phil and Caryl will now call East Lake Okoboji their home. That is a wrap for week 6. J.D. Anderson wins Carroll Am in 3 hole playoff! Thanks to Jim Von Ahn and the crew!

This weekend the Carroll Country Club was host to 144 of the best amateur golfers from around the state of Iowa. On Saturday afternoon I had the opportunity to spend a few hours watching the action. Saturday was a picture perfect golfing day and the fairways and greens of the Carroll Country Club were the perfect setting to spend a June afternoon. The course yielded an eight under par 63 from one of our own Carroll County boys, Johnny Schwaller who starred in several sports at Coon Rapids Bayard High School. For others a defenseless golf course that most thought would get taken advantage of started to show its true colors. The sun set on the first day of play with only a few rounds under par and some of the best players talking about the pin placements and speed of the greens.

Sunday brought a different day as some light rain and wind entered the picture. The sun did not shine much until late but the ole course shinned bright all day long. I spent nine hours driving around my favorite pasture on Sunday. My clubs were in my new Iowa Hawkeye golf bag safely tucked away in the bag room of my favorite clubhouse awaiting Tuesday night Supper league. It was me, an E-z-go golf cart and my bottle of Diet Mt Dew. As I drove around soaking in all of the action I saw some great golf from some of the best. Mike Eckerman’s good friend Gene Elliot who soon will turn 50 can still golf his golfing ball as he played in the final group. Younger local models like Kyler Ludwig, Tanner Ludwig, Kirby Pettitt and Scott Quandt also made that final cut of 20. Twenty time city champion Mike “Jewels” Eckerman and past city champion Terry "Wong" Olson tried to make the cut but the course had none of it.

From a 15 year old who had his cancer survivor Dad on the bag to college golfers to veterans of the game they all tried to tame her but in the end the real winner was the Carroll Country Club. As I drove around strategically positioning myself for the best view of the action in that final 18 a little grin started to form. I saw golfers baffled by the wind whose golf balls exited competition over the fences of holes 13 and 14 only to be found at a later time. I saw golfers taking gigantic swings out of the thick rough. I saw this years champion miss a short putt on 16 only to have a three footer coming back. The greens were nipped with speed in mind and the pins were placed to protect the integrity of the 89 year old.

In the end it took three extra holes to crown a champion. J.D. Anderson of Des Moines who has long been a solid golfer was the only one who was up to the challenge! Congratulations to J.D. and all of the golfers for providing me an afternoon of real enjoyment.

I reserve my biggest thank you for Jim Von Ahn and the entire grounds crew of the Carroll Country Club! Great job guys. I drove around on Sunday afternoon just waiting for someone to ask me if I was a member of this course. My answer would have been evident by the ear to ear smile on my face. I am proud to say that for the past 15 years I have had opportunity to be a member of this place that makes me smile so much and on this Sunday I certainly have never been prouder.

The King of Beers beat Bud Light……Subway wins big……Cycles cruise!

On a night that the wind was a huge subject of discussion your Bud Light team took another step backwards. The new King of Beers team sporting their new red Budweiser hats hammered your Bud Light team 44 to 28. It was a clean sweep for the Bud boys. Long time subscriber, top local amateur, highly successful and more veteran golfer Craig Mertz was beaten 13 to 5 by Little Irish Pat Malloy. Mertz was awarded low gross for his losing efforts. Bud Two Troy Auen lost 11 to 7 to GPS Bob Pudenz. Mike Schulz lost to John Greteman 11 to 7. Captain Mike Franey lost a close one to Fred Dolezal. For their efforts Budweiser was awarded low net team. Your Bud Light team solidified the last place position in the Zach Johnson division. Spirits are still high on the team but dwindling fast! • Volquartsen Customs upset the defending champions Macke Motors 39 to 33. Flying Bob Raue was extremely quiet after the defeat. League records show Raue losing to Darrin Janning 13 to 5. Enough said. Nic Volquartsen was low net
• League leading Olsen Muhlbauer were knocked off by CSB. Jay Westerkamp was the star for the bankers. With Budweiser’s victory over your Bud Light team the accountants lead is only 5.
• Hawkeye Commodity Brokers topped Bud One and the La-z-boys. Steve “Hans” Auen tied the car man Ken Payer. Bud One nailed closet to the pin honors.
• Greteman Chiropractic adjusted Templeton Rye 40 to 32.
• The buses of Windstar beat Fairway Frank and Stiff Sticks 39 to 33. Fairway Frank drained the longest putt.

Over in the other division…….

• Papa Joe and the Soggy Subs unloaded on Kasperbauer Cleaners 52 to 20. The victory comes with an asterisk as Kasperbauer only had two players present. Tom Duff was low gross with a 37 and the MVP for the subs. With the lop sided victory the subs have taken a one shot lead.
• Second place Grady’s salsa continued their winning ways 44 to 28 over Carroll Glass. Tomato John the MVP with a 14 to 4 victory over Andy Reiman. Benet Snyder scored closet to the pin.
• Carroll Cycle Center rode the wings of Jay Drees to a 43 to 29 win over Byron’s Boyz. Drees was awarded the low net honors, the cycles were low net team and Terry Ruchti made the longest putt.
• Juergens topped par by two with half a team.
• The pizzas of Pizza Ranch beat the oil jobbers of Community Oil.
• Utilicomm beat Sharp Funeral Home by 4. Wyatt Haukap the MVP for the cable guys.

• Happy Birthday wishes this week go out to Steve Sinnard and Scott Kanne.
• Last night the league was 8 players short. What is going on? I am waiting for the night that your Bud Light team plays a short team as it might be our only chance to get out of the cellar.

On Sunday we lost a friend who always had a joke for us that gave us so many times of laughter. I vividly remember watching the 9-11 tragedy with Tony at
628 N. Main(the old Hyvee building) where we both had offices. We had a lot of fun times in that old office building. It is hard to think that he will not be on the fairways and greens of the Carroll Country Club any longer. I challenge everyone to keep laughing in memory of D.A. Tony Bluml! Thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Linda and sons Chad and Corey.

Congratulations to the State Champion Kuemper boys golf team. Best of luck to the Kuemper Girls Golf team today in the quest for a State Championship.

The Memorial Day scramble at the Carroll Country Club was a gusty affair. Congratulations to Mike Franey, Lynda Dukes Franey, Kristy McDermott and Jon Hoffert for claiming the championship by a half a point over the Dream Team, Craig and Sheri Mertz and Steve and Keeley Sinnard. Papa Joe Pick collected the longest drive on hole #7. Pick proudly walked up and hit is drives all day from the Gold tees.

Tonight your Bud Light team will tee off the 13 tee against the newly formed King of Beers team. Bud Two Troy Auen, Captain Mike Franey, Bud Three Steve Auen and Steve Sinnard will make the call. Long time subscriber, top local amateur, highly successful and more veteran golfer Craig Mertz and Mike Schulz will be sitting out for this weeks action.
