Bud Light wins……Happy 40th Birthday John Dukes…..The Library suffers loss……Another hole in one for Mike Nelson!

Happy 40th Birthday to my youngest brother in law John Dukes. What a great time was had by all south of Cancun last week. Thanks for the entertainment.

After a week of rain the Men’s Supper League hit the course again on a beautiful Iowa night on the fairways and greens of the Carroll Country Club.

Volquartsen Custom remains at the top of the Phil Mickelson division with another win by beating par 8 to 2. Cable Guy Chad Kanne and Kevin Forke were both winners while Nic Volquartsen and Boomer Luchentberg suffered losses for the gun company.

Your Bud Light team remained in second with an 8 to 2 win over the European convenience store Fleggard. Bud Three Steve “Hans” Auen , Craig Mertz and Captain Mike Franey were all winners. Steve Sinnard was the only loser for America’s team.

Mid Iowa Team jumped Graddy’s Salsa’s to move into third with a 7 to 3 virus explosion against Computer Concepts. Produce Tom Duff and Papa Joe Pick were winners which the playing pride of Willey Paul Tigges tied his match with Sam Wilkie. Steve “Cuda” Quandt suffered a loss to Cody Forch.

Graddy’s Salsa and Family Specialty Medical Center battled each other to a tie. The two are tied for fourth. Dr. Decay Nick Fangman beat Chemical Dirk Glynn. Brad Pick beat Jeff Scharfenkamp. Diamond Mike Loehr tied Daniel Fitzpatrick. Tomato John Gradoville tied Mortgage Ryan Milligan in the loan broker’s 2014 supper league debut.

Carpet One beat Carroll Glass 6 to 4. John Sturm beat the green paint off Benton Snyder. Glass man Andy Reiman beat Brad Hempstead. Lidderdale’s Brad Stork tied his match with Easy Ed Vanderheiden and Keith Pottebaum tied Carpet Colin Bierl.

Verizon Wireless cooled the motors of Wittrock Motors. Dr. Dave Nystrom beat Karl Christensen, Brock Jones beat Wyatt Haukap, Brandon Vonnahme beat head car dealer Kevin Wittrock and Westside State Savings Bank Matt Lujano beat Travis Aye.

Action over in the Zach Johnson division saw Ag Venture maintain their lead with an 8 to 2 win over Linde Equipment. Dr. Neal Cross, Denny Kasperbauer, and Nick Schon were all winners. Brady Evans fell to Tony Feldman.

Highway 30 Car Wash set the alarms off of Feld Security. Car Wash Todd Pettitt, Jeff Minnich and Randall Road Bierl were all winners. Curtis Stork and Tiger Tom Simons tied for the only blemish on an almost perfect ten.

Champion Ford passed the cycles of the Carroll Cycle Center on the right. Clothier Wade Wilkie and Digger Dave Nelson were winners for the Fords. Jamming Joe Hinners and Rick Vanderheiden were winners for the cycles.

Budweiser beat Chico Kanne and the oil jobbers. Fred Dolezal, GPS Bob Pudenz and John “Gretzy” Greteman were all winners. The head oil jobber Chico Kanne was the only winner for the oil company beating the legend Joel Harris.

Stiff Sticks beat Byronz Boys 6 to 4. Templeton’s Doc Sporrer was the only winner for the most mature team. Bud One Jim Auen tied with Chris Giguere and Magic Mike Nelson tied with Rich Hartley. Nelson recently nailed another hole in one on 15 using a chocked up on nine wood.

The Uncle Bruce Player of the Week is Steve "Hans" Auen who fired a 40 on the front on Tuesday night.

Carroll’s most famous librarian James “Alby” Albertson passed away on June 6 after a brief illness. The library that Albertson held open attracted many visitors to the Quint Avenue location. Visitors included teachers, a school board President, a local community college official, a former girls basketball coach, a former executive director, many members of the Ike Auen Distributing Company and a high school superintendent just to name a few. Close friend Rob Cordes recently told this publisher about the first time 14 years ago when a fellow facility member invited him to the library where he met the man in charge. Cordes has been a regular patron of the library for all of those years and I know that he will always have the great memories to remember.

A neighbor of Alby’s for six years Rachel Buchanan recalls the day that she was packing to leave with now husband Gordon. In his caring style Alby looked at Gordon and said “if I was twenty years younger she wouldn’t be leaving with you so take care of her.” Buchanan made the 815 mile trek from Nashville to Carroll to pay her respects to the neighbor who she has so many fond memories of.

Many topics were covered over the years at this establishment but all this publisher knows that there was no arguing about the future of this library, no grandstanding at the local city council meeting or no newspaper articles voicing concerns about how much square feet there should be. You see the 1,022 square feet of space on the main floor of this Quint Avenue home was a place where people respected each other and came to unwind from life’s stresses. I enjoyed the few times that I visited the famous library  and always got a smile on my face when I saw him buzzing around on that scooter even on days that were not fit for riding. The memories of the library and the man who operated it could produce more books than any library could hold.

Alby…………….”Thanks for how you treated people. A treatment that each and every one you met will cherish for a lifetime and “As always this Bud’s for you.”

Some housekeeping items to mention.....

Happy Belated birthdays to Steve Sinnard, Scott Kanne, Dave Nelson and Payton White

This report would like to wish a speedy recovery to Phil Dukes who broke his leg in Mexico while attending his son's 40th birthday celebration.

A huge shout out to everyone at the Carroll Country Club for a wonderful Carroll AM this past weekend.

That is all that I have for now! Off to God's country and the black and gold pins at the Finkbine Golf Course.

Have a great week! Fairways and greens to all!

Defending Champions go down hard…….Hans Auen benched……Fred is back…..Happy Memorial Day Weekend!

For the fifth time of the year the Men’s Supper League ascended on the fairways and greens of the beautiful Carroll County Club. Your Bud Light team upset an always Par team 7 to 3. America’s team was led by long time subscriber, top local amateur, highly successful and more veteran golfer Craig Mertz who fired a three under 31. Mertz was awarded low gross honors for the third consecutive week. Mertz has been seen practicing and working on his game a lot this spring and this publisher wonders if it is the pressure that is mounting from son Nate? Don’t worry Craig it is not if it is only when he beats you. Mike Schulz laid down his fishing pole long enough to recover from a loss last week to win his match. Captain Mike Franey tied his match with some shaky play on the back nine. Steve “Hans” Auen the only loser and will be riding the pine for week 6 action. Bud Two Troy Auen was attending a soccer game.
Sinnard poses with a good catch!
Steve Sinnard was spotted on the Florida fishing tour where he reeled in some big ones. Your Bud Light team remains in second only four points behind the defending league champions Volquartsen Custom.

The gunners stumbled this week and were well adjusted by the Family Specialty Medical Center. Casket Kyle Atkinson was the only winner for the guns. Birthday boy Nic Volquartsen had the candles on his cake blown out but manage to still find a way to celebrate.

The Mid Iowa Team finally may have recovered from an early season hangover as they trounced Fleggard 9 to 1. Papa Joe Pick, Produce Tom Duff and the playing pride of Willey, Iowa were all winners. Junkyard Dog Cuda Quandt tied his match with John Feld despite a one under 33.

Carroll Glass beat Wittrock Motors 6 to 4. John Deere green Benton Snyder and Brad Stork led the way for glass guys. Brock Jones and Dr. Dave Nystrom were winners for the motor company.

Graddy’s Salsa spilled salsa all over the new carpet of Carpet One. It looks like Captain Tomato John has given the team a much needed pep talk although he was the only loser for the team. I guess three out of four isn’t bad. Diamond Mike Loehr, a subbing Catfish Ed Tomka and Dr. Decay Nick Fangman were all winners. Brad Hempstead the only winner for the carpets. The salsas were awarded low net team.

A huge night for Pat Macke’s cell phones of Verizon Wireless. Wyatt Haukap, Pat Macke, Michael Kasperbauer and Karl Christensen were all winners. Grant’s dad Pat was low net.

Over in the Zach Johnson division saw Ag Venture remain hot with a 9 to 1 win over Feld Security. It looks like Mike Schulz needs to check his own alarms as they keep going off the wrong way. Brady Evans, Denny Kasperbauer and Dr. Neal Cross were all winners. Easy Ed Vanderheiden tied his match with the head bus driver Jeff Greteman. The Aggers were awarded low net team.

The Highway 30 Car Wash cleaned the grime off of Linde Equipment 6 to 4 and now is tied for second with Champion Ford. Randy Bierl and new subscriber Curtis Stork were winners for the washes. Stork nailed the longest putt on 9 and shared low net honors with Dr. Neal Cross. Bill Linde and Brad Woodward won for the equipment dealers.

Champion Ford topped the King of Beers 7 to 3. Counter Top Pat Malloy the only winner for the King of Beers. Head Golf Professional Nick Schon tied Digger Dave Nelson. Wade Wilkie and Steve Herrin won for the car company. The highly anticipated return of Fred Dolezal will not come soon enough as this team is in need of some help.

Carroll Cycle Center laid rubber all over Byronz Boys 8 to 2. Jamming Joe Hinners, Corey Buml and Head Hog Terry Ruchti were all winners. Bluml was awarded low gross. Rich Hartley was the only winner for the boys.

Community Oil broke the most mature team Stiff Sticks 8 to 2. Sam Wilkie, Todd Kanne and Jerry Janson were winners for the oil jobbers. Nothing reportable for the sticks.

This week's Uncle Bruce Players of the week are Corey Bluml and Pat Macke!

Happy Belated Birthday to Keeley Sinnard! Hope you are having a great birthday month!

Thanks for the EMS of Carroll County for 40 years of service. What dedication it takes to help others in their time of need at all times of the day and night. Join them tomorrow at Graham Park Shelter house from 10 to 3. Thanks!

Can you tell which one is me? Offensive lineman Brandon Scherff joined over 500 Carroll Area Hawkeye fans in Arcadia for the spring outing.

As always this Bud's for you and ON IOWA!

Respectfully submitted,

Defending Champions on a roll........Bud Light stumbles.........Hawkeyes in Arcadia tonight!

Week four saw a cool night over the fairways and greens of the Carroll Country Club. The weather was cool but the defending Supper League Champions from Volquartsen Custom were not. The guns shot their way through the Norton anti virus software of Computer Concepts and crashed the computers 10 to 0 to remain on top of the Phil Mickelson Division. Chad Kanne, Kyle Atkinson, Nic Volquartsen and Kevin Forke were all winners for the gun makers. The champs off season acquisition of Casket Kyle Atkinson has seem to paid off. Atkinson has contracted with Butch Harmon to provide instruction to the team and was saw talking with Harmon at last month's Masters in Augusta.
Further more inside sources of this report are investigating an upcoming team appearance on the golf show "Feherty." It seems that all of the hype of winning a Supper League Championship has been taken to a new level. One has to wonder if this has been achieved at gun point?
Your Bud Light team stumbled in week 4 with a 4 to 6 loss to the glass cutters from Carroll Glass. Long time subscriber, top local amateur, highly successful and more veteran golfer Craig Mertz and Bud Three Steve Auen were the only winners for the beers beating Keith Pottebaum and Benton Snyder. The famous Lidderdale Country Store assistant chef Brad Stork and the head glass man Andy Reiman took care of Steve Sinnard and Bud Two Troy Auen. The glass company was awarded low net team.  Long time subscriber, top local amateur, highly successful and more veteran golfer Craig Mertz was low gross for the second straight week. Andy Reiman was low net. Americas's team are only 8 points behind the defending champions with eleven weeks to go. Mike Schulz and Mike Franey were on the bench for this week.

Carpet One is in third despite a 4 to 6 loss to Par. Easy Ed Vanderheiden and the pride and joy of Churdan Iowa Daniel Fitzpatrick were the only winners for the carpets.

The Mid Iowa Team continues to seek traction out of the gate this year and split their match 5  to 5 with Pat Macke's cell phones. Willey's best golfer Paul Tigges and Junkyard Dog Cuda Quandt were the only winners for Mid Iowa. The head teller from Westside State Savings Bank Matt Lujano beat Catfish Ed Tomka. Wyatt Haukap and Papa Joe Pick tied. Pick soared to a 41 on the front nine in week 4. Pat Macke nailed the longest putt on 9.

The tomatoes of Graddy's Salsa are rotting on the vine in 2014 as they suffer there third loss of the year. Dr. Decay Nick Fangman and Jeff Scharfenkamp were winners for the tomatoes. The Horbach brothers....Bill and John carried the Fleggard team. Tomato John did not participate in week 4. Time to spray the tomatoes for bugs John or change your team name to Graddy's Living Lettuce because at least we know that is still alive!

Family Specialty Medical adjusted the motors of Wittrock Motors. Papa Joe's boys Brad and Aaron won for the chiropractors. Maybe some Father's Day lessons would be a good present? Just saying! Brock Jones beat Chemical Dirk Glynn and the head salesman Kevin Wittrock and Jamie North tied. Aaron Pick was closest to the pin on 8.

Action over in the Zach Johnson Division saw Ag Venture remain on top of the divison with a 7 to 3 win over Carroll Cycle Center. Jay Drees was the only winner for the cycles. Drees nailed the longest putt on 18. Head Hog Terry Ruchti and Rick Vanderheiden tied their match. Brady Evans and Denny Kasperbauer beat Jamming Joe Hinners and Corey Bluml.

Highway 30 Car Wash matched the ag boys with a 7 to 3 win over Byronz Boys and also won low net team. Car Wash Todd Pettitt led the way with a low gross 34 on his way to beating Tony Feldmann. Randy Bierl the only loser for the car washes.

Chamption Ford set off the alarms of Feld Security 6 to 4. Wade Wilkie and Steve "Blue" Herrin beat Ron Badding and Jair Mayhall. Numbers Bob Muhlbauer and Michael Kasperbauer beat Digger Dave Nelson and Monument Man Loren Boyce. It must have been cold on week 4 because on the course reporters have told me that the Fords even came in before dark.

WOW....talking about coming out of a slump! The oil jobbers of Community Oil posted their first win of the season with a 8 to 4 victory over Linde Equipment. The Equipment Dealers must be busy helping the farmers feed the world! Head oil jobber Chico Kanne the only loser for the oils. Todd Kanne, Produce Tom Duff and Jerry Jansen posted victories over the Linde Boys and Brad Woodward. No doubt we will see Chico carrying a large bucket of balls over the road to Willey to the learning center.

Budweiser posted back to back wins with a 7 to 3 win over the most mature team Stiff Sticks. Counter top Pat Malloy and Johnnie Greteman beat Larry "Doc" Sporrer and Fairway Frank Comito. Trusty Mike Nelson beat GPS Bob Pudenz. Nelson was the closest to the pin on 17. The long awaited return of Fred Dolezal is soon to be over and I look for the King of Beers to make a run to the top just like one of Dolezal's horses.

The Uncle Bruce Player of the Week is Brother Car Wash Todd Pettitt!

The Black and Gold will invade the town of Arcadia tonight as the Carroll Area I-Club presents their Spring Outing featuring Captain Kirk Ferentz. This is a great event to get up close and personally talk with the coaches of our Iowa Hawkeyes! Hope to see you all there tonight!

Sonia Walsh of Carroll is opening an acting studio. Walsh was a key member of developing this blog and is ultra talented. In a recent interview with Doug Burns of the Carroll Daily Times Herald Walsh said "There's not something  like this for a student who is more dramatically inclined." Talk about drama just come out to Supper League on Tuesdays. There are certainly a full cast of characters out there. Let's take a look at what we have. We have Farmer and a dog, a tomato, three beer guys, a couple of oil jobbers, a catfish and plenty of bank personnel. What a pool to draw from. Best of luck Sonia and we all know that you will do great!

Just a note from week three. Results were not made available to this report on a timely fashion so they were not included.

As always "This Bud's for you and ON IOWA."

Kasperbauer goes low.....Pick and Cuda beat over the weekend........I Club Banquet on the 15th!

Nick looks good carrying the black and gold!

It turned out to be a good weather night for week 1 of the Carroll Country Club's Men's Supper League. Your Bud Light team came out of the gates fast on way to 8 -2 win over Graddy's Salsa. The only points for Graddy's came from a subbing Mike Schulz. Schulz scores points for the other team by beating Bud Two Troy Auen. The truth be told Schulz played well and Auen did not. Captain Mike Franey beat Mike Loehr and drained the longest putt on 18. Long time subscriber, top local amateur, highly successful and more veteran golfer Craig Mertz blistered the back nine on his way to a low gross 33 and victory over Tomato John. Mertz also was closest to the pin on 17. Steve Sinnard beat Dr. Decay Nick Fangman. Your Bud Light team is only one point out the lead in the Phil Mickelson Divsion.

Week 1 leaders are Carpet One who laid a 9 to 1 whooping the new Wittrock Motors team. Jon Sturm, Colin Bierl and Ed Vanderheiden beat Brock Jones, Kevin Wittrock and Travis Aye respectively. Carpet One was awarded low net team.

Defending Champions Volquartsen Customs beat Fleggard 8 to 2. Kevin Forke led the way for the guns.
Tony Pietig led the fleas.

Computer Concepts installed a virus on Family Specialty Medical. Only two first night players for the meds. Cody Forch was the all star computer and also was low net.

Mid Iowa Team beat Carroll Glass 6 to 4. A subbing John Weber was the only loser for the winners. Nick Schon led the glass cutters. Papa Joe Pick, Paul Tigges and Cuda Quandt all won. Quandt and Pick are still trying to recover from a beating on Saturday from Troy Auen and Mike Franey.

Par cut the phone lines of Verizon Wireless as Bud Light's Steve Auen was the only winner.

Over in the Zach Johnson division Denny Kasperbauer scorched the front nine with a 34 to put Ag Venture on top. Kasperbauer was awarded low gross, low net and shut out Trusty Mike Nelson. Ag Venture was low net team. Ag Venture shut out Fairway Frank and the Stiff Sticks.

Carroll Cycle Center beat Budweiser 9 to 1. Tom Farner tied his match to score the only point for the King of Beers. Produce Tom Duff was the star for the hogs.

Byronz Boyz beat Feld Security 9 to 1. Ron Bubba Badding the only winner for the alarms. Chris Giguere nailed the longest putt for the Boyz

Champion Ford tied Linde Equipment. Monument Man Loren Boyce, Wade Wilkie won for the cars. Steve Blue Herrin was the only loser and Digger Dave Nelson tied his match and was closet to the pin on 8.

Highway 30 Car Wash waxed Community Oil despite several Chico Kanne sightings at the learning center. Car Wash Todd Pettitt was the MVP for the washes.

Denny Kasperbauer is the Uncle Bruce player of the week.

Don't forget about and look for details for the upcoming Member Guest Golf Weekend and the Relay for Life Outing

Carroll Area I Club Spring Banquet is May 15th in Arcadia. Hope to see you there!

Jimmy!

This past week many of us had to say good bye to one of our favorite dogs....Jimmy Nelson!
He had a good life rumbling through the 1,296 square feet of main level living area at the place that he called home 214 W. 15th Street, Carroll, IA 51401. He would meet every and all visitors at the door with enthusiasm and a tail that could knock the sturdiest of things on their side. The only one he did not like was the mail carrier from the United States Postal Service. This dislike may have been earned once upon a time by a certain federal employee.

I offer some of my favorite moments and memories of Jimmy.........
  • Where he made most of his friends was on Iowa Hawkeye game days which included some memorable victories at the Nelson household. He was a huge Hawkeye fan. He loved jumping around like he was laughing at the crazy Hawkeye fans screaming at the television. A game day at the Nelson will never be the same from here on out.
  • He loved laying under the granite kitchen table as refreshments flowed above. He was around for his fair share of Busch Light, wine and of course the famous Pisano.
  • When Lynda would visit he would go crazy in anticipation of a receiving a treat from the closet in the dining room. He knew where they were and was always in a hurry to get there.
  • He loved to hunt and go get the birds. Dave or Pete would get their guns and equipment from the basement and he would immediately perk up. You had to be careful of saying the "H" word when he was around otherwise a sad face of disappointment would appear. That goes hand in hand with the "W" word...walk.
  • He was the stair keeper of the legendary Pokey's kitchen. He would watch as you went down the stairs and waited for you to come back up because he knew that he was not allowed down that staircase.  His only dislike of the activities of the candy kitchen was that awful smelly red candy. He would retire into the bathroom to escape the smell.
  • A true family dog he played oh so gently with his brother Peter and sister Anna. He reluctantly poised in many a family picture.  He loved to sit by Gina who would unexpectedly drop some scrap of food from the table. She would always look confused on how that happen. Jimmy had "MOM" wrapped around his tail.
  • He was so gentle around kids as well. He loved to play with Alec and Shay Sinnard even at the beginning when they couldn't even say his name so they called him names like gog...big dog...Jimmy the big dog to name just a few.
  • He did have an attitude when things were not going the way he thought they should. He would not eat his food if Dave was gone overnight. I coaxed him into eating one time by sitting on the floor, taking the food out of his dish, placing on the floor for him to enjoy. This was our little tradition. Quite frequently you would stop over to the house and see a shoe, bra, clothes or the favorite bird of the day that had not been chewed to shreds in the living room. But when things were unbearable for Jimmy he would burst up the stairs and mark his spot on Pete's bed.
  •  He was always there to soothe our pains by just being himself. My eyes water when I think about the memories of our friend Jimmy.

Thanks for the memories Jimmy! Gone to Hawkeye Heaven! You will not soon be forgotten.

Written on behalf of all of your friends! On Iowa and Go Hawks!

Your friend
Mike
