An opening
round of two under par 70 set the pace for Tyler Naberhaus. Naberhaus took the
one shot lead in the final nine and never looked back. Naberhaus shot a three
under par 33 in the final round to seal the win. The 27 hole total of 103
was four shots better than Charles Becker and Eric Butenbach. Two time champion
Brett Abbotts finished fourth with 108.

Naberhaus is
a 2010 graduate of Kuemper High School where he saw great success in his
golfing career. Now living in Urbandale and working at Millennium Technology of
Iowa, a commercial HVAC manufacturer’s rep.
Other
players in the championship flight were Levi Stanley 110, Jason Fisher 112, Paul
Tigges 112, John Dukes 114, and Collin Hackett 116. Brett Underberg, Dean
Dozier, and three time champion Craig Mertz qualified for the championship nine
and did not play.
Doc Flander
won the first flight with 78, Cory Schultes was second with 78, and Kevin Forke
was third with 79.
Other
players in the first flight were Tyler Auen 80, Eric Johnson 80, Cameron Copeland
80, Matt Mikkelson 81, Josh Farber 81, and Steve “Cuda” Quandt with 82.
John Baratta
won the second flight with 82, Brad Woodard was second with 83, Lonny Lehrkamp
was third with 84.
Other
players in the second flight were Bill Badding 84, Wade Adams 86, Mike Franey
86, Chad Felix 87, Ron Cheney 87 and Bill Bird 87.
Jon Scharingson
won the third flight with 88, Tim Gute was second with 88 and Clint Cummings
was third with 88.

players in the third flight were Jason Evers 88, Nic Volquartsen 89, Steve “Hans”
Auen 90, Matt Wahlberg 91, Brent Henningsen 94, Skyler Roder 98, and Darren
Janning 102.
Flag prize
winners were closest to the pin on hole #2 – Eric Buntenbach first round and
Paul Tigges second round. Closest to the pin on hole #5 – Matt Wahlberg first
round and Josh Farber second round. Longest drive on hole #9 – Cory Schultes
first round and Brett Abbotts second round.
A big thank
you to Jake Kopaska for having the golf course in great shape, Cody Renwanz and
Joe Foote for all their work in the clubhouse. “It was one of the hottest
tournaments on record with heat indexes close to 110 degrees. The fairways and
greens were in great shape” said Tournament Director Mike Franey.
A big thank
you to Sheri Mertz, Lynda Dukes Franey and Shirley Franey for their help
running the tournament, Danielle Weitl for printing the score cards, Ike Auen
Distributing Company for the tournament sign, Tim Gute and Market on 30 for his
help with the plates, napkins, hamburgers, silverware, salads, and deserts.

balls and Curt Kirsch for the beans.
The
tournament named after Bill Franey who passed away in May of 2006 attracted 61
players. The tournament was formerly known as the Al Hoy Memorial where Bill
Franey served as tournament director for 25 years. In 2006 the board of
directors of the golf course renamed the tournament the Bill Franey Open.
Proceeds from the tournament support two power line scholarships given annually
to a student training to be an electric lineman at Northwest Iowa Community
College in Sheldon. Franey was a lineman for 31 years and served as line
superintendent for another 10 years for Midland Power/Greene County REC in
Jefferson.
Shirley,
Lynda and Mike Franey are very grateful for all of the support of this
tournament, especially with how hot it was. See you next year on Sunday
August 24, 2025 which will be 20th year for the Bill Franey Open!
